Annotation:

Course provides students with basic knowledge of Czech vocabulary, orthographical and morphological rules. Other topics dealt with are the following: types of word-formation (prefixes, suffixes and combined formation), compounds and abbreviations, structure of the Czech vocabulary system, literary and colloquial expressions, professional and slang expressions, as well as the Czech phraseology.

Topics of lectures:

  1. Czech vocabulary and its system, relations among lexemes.
  2. Basic Czech orthographical rules, varied written forms.
  3. Introduction to the system of Czech morphology.
  4. Formation of words in relation to their origin (domestic words, borrowings).
  5. Prefixes and suffixes and their types.
  6. Czech, hybrid and borrowed compounds and their formation.
  7. Strata of the Czech vocabulary, literary and colloquial expressions; professional and slang expressions, their motivation and usage.
  8. Czech phraseology.

Notes:

Requirements: Participation in the seminars, study of literature, preparation for discussion on selected topics within the seminars (max. 50 points), seminar paper in English (4 pages on a topic connected with the course content, based on the student's research, observation of actual language phenomena or interlingual comparison (max. 50 points).
Students must obtain min. 50 points.
