Annotation:

The course provides theoretical background to developing communicative skills in foreign languages, with a special emphasis on acquiring and learning languages at an early age. Students will get experience in micro-teaching at primary English classes in local schools. They are expected to analyze what they have learned and experienced in relation to the  theoretical assumptions.

Aims and objectives:

The course aims to develop students' knowledge regarding the principles of foreign language education at an early age, with an insight into how education is organized in the Czech Republic and abroad.

The student will be able to:

  • understand the key didactic issues in terms of  foreign language teaching of Young Learners (role of a teacher, role of a learner, interaction, vocabulary/grammar teaching, individual approaches, communicative language skills etc.).
  • use effective visual aids professionally to encourage Young Learners' motivation.
  • use various didactic techniques and strategies.
  • analyse and evaluate his/her teaching practice.

Topics of seminars:

1.- 2. Teaching speaking - aspects of communicative activities, range of tasks, range of materials with a special focus on teaching young learners, teaching pronunciation.
3.- 4. Teaching writing - a general model for teaching writing, range of tasks, range of materials focused on young learners, teaching spelling.
5.- 6. Teaching listening - aspects of communicative activities, processes involved in listening, range of tasks, range of materials with a special focus on young learners.
7.- 8. Teaching reading - processes involved in reading, range of tasks, range of materials focused on young learners.
9.- 10. The lesson - structure, objectives, lesson plans, self-evaluation sheets.
11.-12. Class management - interaction, learner groupings, disruptive behavior, classroom language.
13. Review of principles of communicative approach to teaching and learning languages with a special focus on teaching young learners.
