Course description:

The aim of the course is to develop students' motivation, experience, practical and theoretical knowledge in metalwork. Students learn to produce artefacts according to design sketches, original patterns or their own designs. They develop a higher level of skill in selecting and applying basic means of expression and metalwork techniques. Participants learn how to choose appropriate materials for specific metal objects, in order to achieve the necessary functional and aesthetic requirements. Students gradually build up their skills in using traditional techniques and operations, including the progression between the individual stages of the production process and compliance with basic technological principles. Theoretical knowledge is also enhanced by the study of contemporary and historical stylistic features and the relevant standards and regulations applicable to heritage conservation.

Content:

  • 1. – 3. Introduction to technical and artistic metalwork in the broad context – theoretical information, first practical experience of working with the material, principles underlying basic means of expression and techniques.
  • 4. – 6. Enhancement of experience and knowledge, theoretical knowledge of metal-shaping – from the design phase (drawing) through visualization and presentation skills (modelling) to project documentation; solving creative problems by applying traditional techniques and technologies; devising a schedule for the various operations and stages; necessity of achieving a harmonious progression between the individual stages of production, including materials and accuracy; principles underlying the choice of appropriate materials for a particular product in order to achieve the required parameters.
  • 7. – 9. Technical and aesthetic issues in metalwork, artistic metalwork and locksmithing; principles of traditional and modern design. Reinforcement and enhancement of experience and practical/theoretical knowledge of materials/techniques; understanding the importance of knowledge of historical developments (stylistic features of individual periods) in craft/artistic metalwork and the need to respect relevant parameters and requirements in connection with the desired aesthetic characteristics of the finished product.
  • 10. – 13. Relation between contemporary (modern) artistic metalwork and historical stylistic/artistic features in specific creative projects – planning, implementation, production. Presentation and interpretation of artefacts produced.
